7. Is Intrinsic motivation realistic in schools?

A common focus in schools is to foster students' intrinsic motivation for learning, but is this a realistic ambition?
In Episode 7, Dr Shyam Barr and Rory McCaughey consider the differences between intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation. They explore why extrinsic motivation might be perceived as a 'dirty word' and whether intrinsic motivation is realistic drawing on Ryan et al's (2021) taxonomy of motivation.
